Artists for Humanity

Sample student murals from the AFH website.

Who: Shane O'Gara - Outreach / Marketing Coordinator
Where: South Boston
When: Monday morning 11-12

What we learned about:
  • AFH does photography, screen printing, graphic design and other arts to cultivate young artists.
  • LEED certified building.
  • They serve under served students from Boston Public schools (grades 9-12).
  • 60% private funding, 40% from sale of art.
  • This was the 3rd home they have had and they own this building.
  • Through finding work in the arts for their students they build essential skills to help students be successful in work and life.
Why this is connected to our topic: We explored different routes of education. We wanted to learn how kids have developed through this program. Even though its a specialized program they get kids to take a holistic approach. They hold kids accountable, build relationships and follow them through their lives. Gives kids an outlet.

It's a job for the students who are paid to work here - 3 strikes they are out. Students cultivate real world skills like meeting with clients and working in both individual with group contexts.

If we were continuing this topic group we would have a second post that would look at our driving questions and how this visit helped address them.

AFH is a great resources not only to the students they serve but also to educators. To find out more visit their website.
